CALCITE
WITH FLUORITE

Chenzhou
Hunan Province, China

6.6 x 3.5 x 3.5 Inches
17 x 9 x 9 Centimeters
Cabinet

At first glance this is an unassuming yet large calcite specimen. However when you look closely it reveals itself to be much more... Throughout the specimen very tiny clear and pale blue "porcelin" fluorite crystals are nestled in between and on the densely packed calcite. The lack of contrast on this specimen in ambient light allows the fluorite to blend in but under shortwave UV lighting they crystals really pop - This piece is electric and very fun to show off!!

Calcite is a rock-forming mineral with a chemical formula of CaCO3. It is extremely common and found throughout the world in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. Some geologists consider it to be a "ubiquitous mineral" - one that is found everywhere.

Calcite is the principal constituent of limestone and marble. These rocks are extremely common and make up a significant portion of Earth's crust. They serve as one of the largest carbon repositories on our planet.

The properties of calcite make it one of the most widely used minerals. It is used as a construction material, abrasive, agricultural soil treatment, construction aggregate, pigment, pharmaceutical and more. It has more uses than almost any other mineral.

Most minerals fluoresce a single color - Calcite has been known to fluoresce red, blue, white, pink, green, and orange.

The word Fluorite derived from the Latin "fluo" - to flow, because the mineral is used as a flux in iron smelting.

Fluorites from certain localities exhibit a very strong fluorescence, due to impurities in the crystal. In 1852 the phenomenon of fluorescence was named after fluorite. It also gave the name to its constitutive element fluorine.

Fluorite has a wide range of colors, which depends on impurities, exposure to radiation, and the size of the color centers. Color distribution is often zonal or spotty.

Fluorite is found as a common gangue mineral in hydrothermal veins, especially those containing lead and zinc minerals. It is also found in some greisens, granites, pegmatites and high-temperature veins, and as a component of some marbles and other metamorphic rocks.
